Claire Detels is a musicologist, pianist, harpsichordist, and fiber artist who moved to Taos in 2014 after a career of teaching at the University of Arkansas’ Department of Music in Fayetteville from 1982 – 2008. Detels holds a BA from Colorado College, MA and PHD from the University of Washington; and has studied piano with Alan and Alvin Chow, Neal O’Doan, Randolph Hokanson, Max Lanner, Reah Sadowsky, and most recently Jazz pianist Claudia Burson. Claire’s specialties in piano performance and research are African-American composers of the Delta region, women piano composers, 19th century Italian opera, and feminist aesthetics.
Since moving to Taos, Ms. Detels has been pianist and Assistant Director with the Taos Community Chorus, violinist with the Taos Contra Band and the Taos Community Chorus String Quartet. She has also been a board member and performer with the Taos Soundscapes chamber music players, and organizer and participant in a house concert Schubertiad and “Great Women Piano Composers” concert. She was busy this summer as staff pianist with the Taos Opera Institute. And her fiber arts is currently being shown at the Amman Gallery in Taos.
