Repertoire

“A German Requiem” (Johannes Brahms, completed in 1866) is based on the idea of using the German language of Martin Luther instead of the Latin text. Next to Handel’s “Messiah”, it is the most -performed multi-movement choral work ever composed. We are using the revered English translation by Lara Hoggard.

“South Pacific” was a ground breaking Broadway musical (Rodgers & Hammerstein, 1949). Based on James Michener’s Pulitzer-prize-winning short stories, it is known for its progressive message regarding race and interracial romance. Set during WWII, it is one of the most acclaimed and influential musicals in history.

“O Mio Babbino Caro” (Puccini, sung by soprano Elizabeth Calvert) is from his opera “Gianni Schicchi”. Lauretta begs her father to allow her marriage to her true love. If not, she will throw herself from the Ponte Vecchio into the Arno River. Italian drama at its best!

“The Neighbors’ Chorus” (J. Offenbach, from “La Jolie Parfumeuse”, 1873) is about a nosy group of neighbors. They are speculating wildly about a young man’s recent love…to his face! It is a widely sung English translation from 1954.
